Coronation School Saved… Thank You!

June 18, 2014

A letter of thanks to the supporters and residents of North Glenora,

As a community member and parent of students at Coronation Elementary School, I would like to extend a huge thank you to you, my friends and neighbours.

Many of you are aware that the Edmonton Public School Board (EPSB) was considering closing Coronation School and consolidating it with other schools. Thanks in part to our community resolve – to those who wrote letters, canvassed for and signed our petition, and attended meetings – Coronation School will remain open.

My husband and I originally chose to send our children to Coronation because it was close; we can walk to school and encourage our children to be physically active and environmentally responsible. As our first two children have progressed through school we have discovered that our choice has been an unexpected gift to our family for so many more reasons.

Yes, Coronation School is a nearby community school giving our children a strong educational foundation, but this has meant more than locale and the three R’s. Our kids are known by their peers and by neighbours of all ages in the halls, the playground, and nearby centres like the library and grocery store. They have learned that this recognition comes with responsibility to care for people and the world around them, to learn what it means to be a citizen of North Glenora and of Edmonton.

Coronation is also an International Baccalaureate (IB) school. I took for granted that our school would have a specialty program, as do most schools in our city; but I have come to appreciate that the IB program is so much more. This internationally recognized and sought out program is one that students in other parts of Canada and the world can pay upwards of $10,000 in tuition to attend each year. And here it is free. What makes this program so desirable? It is a program giving students tools for life-long learning, where each student’s voice matters, where students navigate and learn in an environment with people who think differently, where students learn to be global citizens.

This round in our fight to keep our school is over, but we are not done; we need our program to grow. I fully appreciate that each family has many reasons to choose the foundation of their child’s education. I’d like to encourage you to consider Coronation School for your family and in recommendations to those you know. It is a wonderful resource that it what it is because of the special community surrounding the unique programming.

Most sincerely,

Cara Roemmich

North Glenora Playschool

Do you have preschool children? We’d love for them to join other young children from the community at the North Glenora Playschool. Children (and parents of children) who attend the playschool form lasting friendships through the schooling at Coronation Elementary School. The playschool is currently accepting registrations for the 2014-2015 school year. If your child is turning 3 or 4 by March 1, 2015 they are eligible to attend.
